If you have a UPVC door, there's a good chance your lock can be snapped open in under 10 seconds. That's not an exaggeration. Lock snapping has been the number one method of forced entry on UPVC doors in the UK for years, and most people have no idea their front door is vulnerable.
What lock snapping is
Most UPVC and composite doors use a euro cylinder lock. That's the oval-shaped barrel you put your key into. Standard euro cylinders have a weak point right where they're gripped by the door. A burglar uses a simple tool, applies force, and the cylinder snaps at that point. Once it's snapped, they can manipulate the mechanism inside and open the door.
The whole thing takes less time than unlocking your door normally. No noise, no fuss. That's why burglars prefer it.
Which doors are at risk
Almost any UPVC or composite door with a standard euro cylinder. If you moved into your home more than a few years ago and haven't replaced the lock, the chances are it's a basic cylinder with no snap protection.
It doesn't matter how new your door is. The door itself might be solid, but if the cylinder is standard, it's still vulnerable.
The fix: anti-snap locks
The solution is straightforward. Replace the cylinder with an anti-snap version. Look for locks rated TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond certified. These are designed to break at a sacrificial point outside the door, so the mechanism stays intact and the door stays locked.
It's not expensive. Fitting one of these takes about 20 minutes and it makes your door significantly harder to get through.
Other things that help
A letterbox cage fitted behind your letterbox stops someone reaching in to lift the handle or hook your keys. It's a cheap addition and worth doing alongside a new cylinder.
A door bar or security chain gives you a secondary line of defence, useful if you want to open the door without fully unlocking it at night.
A note on insurance
Many home insurance policies now specifically require TS007-rated locks on UPVC and composite doors. If you're not sure what you have, check your policy documents. If your locks don't meet the standard and you're broken into, your insurer may not pay out.
What I see on the Wirral
Fitting anti-snap locks is one of the most common jobs I do across the Wirral, second only to lockouts. People call me after a neighbour gets burgled and they suddenly want to know if their lock is up to scratch. Better to do it before that happens. I can fit an anti-snap cylinder and tell you honestly whether your door has any other weak points worth addressing.
